Although some of aging is pre-determined genetically, most of hand aging is due to sun damage, ultraviolet exposure.  Our hands age faster than our face.  People are vigilant in applying sunscreen to their face but often neglect to apply it to their hands.  Thus, brown age spots, wrinkles, and thinning hand skin increase as we age.  Furthermore, similar to our face, our hands lose volume as the years pass, leaving veins and tendons very pronounced.

To turn back the hands of time, dermatologist Victoria A. Cirillo-Hyland, M.D. recommends a combination Intense Pulsed Light Therapy, Fractional Laser Resurfacing, and the fillers Sculptra® and Radiesse®.

Sculptra® and Radiesse® are semi-permanent fillers which last more than a year.  Sculptra®, composed of poly-L-lactic acid microparticles, stimulates your own “collagen factories” to make more collagen over weeks of time and thus, gradually correct the volume loss. Radiesse® composed of microspheres of calcium hydroxyapatite, is also a collagen stimulator.  However, Radiesse® additionally provides some immediate correction similar to the hyaluronic acid fillers Restylane® and Juvederm®.   One or two treatment sessions over three to six months of time are typically required to restore the volume loss with Sculptra® and Radiesse®.
