We all have moles and beauty marks, and most are harmless, non-cancerous growths. Moles form when pigment-producing cells called melanocytes grow in clusters; they’re influenced by genetics and sun exposure, and some are present at birth, while others appear later. Still, knowing when a mole needs a closer look can make a big difference. If you’ve wondered, “Is this a suspicious mole?” you’re not alone—we help patients every day with skin cancer screenings, diagnosis and treatment of moles at our Bryn Mawr, PA practice.
Here are practical signs it’s time to book a professional skin check:
- A new mole that appears after age 30, or a mole that looks different from your others
- Any itching, pain, bleeding, scabbing, or crusting
- Rapid change in size, shape, color, or elevation
- A sore that doesn’t heal in a few weeks
Use the ABCDE rule to spot warning signs for melanoma:
- A – Asymmetry: one half doesn’t match the other
- B – Border: irregular, notched, or blurry edges
- C – Color: multiple colors or very dark black/blue
- D – Diameter: larger than about 6 mm (pencil eraser), though smaller melanomas can occur
- E – Evolving: any change in size, shape, color, or symptoms
Also, remember the “Ugly Duckling” rule: if one mole looks noticeably different from your other moles, treat it as suspicious until a dermatology provider checks it. Trust your instincts—if something feels off, it’s worth a visit.
What happens if we’re concerned? We’ll discuss options that fit your needs. Some moles can be monitored with photos and regular skin checks; others may need a quick biopsy to rule out melanoma. If a mole needs to go, mole removal is typically a straightforward in-office procedure. When a mole is benign, we can also talk about cosmetic mole removal.
Make a habit of monthly self-exams and schedule a yearly skin cancer screening, especially if you have fair skin, many moles, a history of sunburns, a family history of melanoma, or a changing mole.
We’re here to make this simple, supportive, and thorough. If you’re unsure about a particular mole, or you just want peace of mind, let’s check it together.
