What Is AviClear®?

Made by trusted laser manufacturer Cutera, AviClear® is a laser device that works by targeting one of the root causes of acne: oil. Excess oil mixes with dead skin cells to form plugs that close off pores. When this happens, bacteria trapped in the follicle below multiply and cause papules, pustules, and cysts.

AviClear® selectively targets and suppresses oil-producing glands—known as sebaceous glands—with laser energy. This leads to a reduction in oil production and, ultimately, a corresponding reduction in clogged pores and acne breakouts.

AviClear™ FAQs

About 50 million people are affected by this skin condition each year in the United States. Virtually everyone will deal with at least a mild case at some point in life. Breakouts are caused by plugged follicles, which develop when oily sebum, dead skin cells, and other debris clog up pores, which are openings in the skin. Blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules, and even cystic lesions can form as a result.

The skin is covered with sebaceous glands, which are responsible for creating sebum, a lubricating oil that keeps the skin and hair from drying out. The waxy substance is an important element in skin health, but sebum production can increase and decrease—especially during times of hormone fluctuations, like puberty. Excess sebum can mix with debris to create pore-blocking plugs. Acne-causing bacteria also feed on sebum.

Most people have only mild cases of acne that resolve on their own, especially they follow proper self-care practices—including daily and gentle skin cleanses. Acne that is chronically recurrent, persistent, causing discomfort or pain, causing scarring, or otherwise disrupting daily life should be assessed by a board-certified dermatologist. AviClear® is a helpful treatment for patients of all skin types with moderate to severe acne.

Since acne-causing bacteria feed on sebum, AviClear® targets the sebaceous glands with heat. Damaging them results in reduced sebum production, which helps to keep pores open and deprives the bacteria of food. Three half-hour AviClear® sessions are enough to make a visible difference. AviClear® also kills bacteria. All of these benefits combined make future breakouts less likely. AviClear treats acne (cystic, inflammatory and hormonal), on all skin types and age groups. AviClear is safe for all skin types because melanin cells aren’t impacted by AviClear’s unique 1726 nm wavelength.

Fiona M. Halloran, PA-C will perform an Acne Consult and assess your medical history to see if you are a good candidate for the AviClear treatment. If so, she will explain the treatment sequence, and you may schedule the three (3) future AviClear treatment sessions.

How Does AviClear® Work?

Laser energy in the form of a single wavelength of light from the device passes through the surface of the skin and selectively heats the sebaceous glands. This causes them to shrink and produce less oil. The heat can also kill acne-causing bacteria, as well as help to reduce inflammation and redness in the skin.

What Is an AviClear® Treatment Session Like?

A single AviClear® treatment session takes only 30 minutes. The laser device does generate noticeable heat in the skin, but it is equipped with smart sensors and a sapphire-based cooling system—known as AviCool™—to manage the skin’s temperature throughout the session and maximize both comfort and safety for patients. The sensation is well-tolerated and similar to the feeling of something quickly “snapping” against the skin. No pain-mitigation strategies are needed, but patients who have questions or concerns about the intensity of the sensations can discuss their options with the team ahead of their treatment.

What Happens After an AviClear® Treatment?

Oil-producing glands will begin to reduce production after a treatment, but ideal results require three separate sessions spaced four to six weeks apart.

Clinical studies revealed that most patients saw at least a 50-percent resolution in their acne at the six-month mark. Results continue to improve beyond this with best results being reported at nine to twelve months after the last treatment.

More Acne-Treating Options

Bryn Mawr Skin & Cancer Institute has numerous strategies for treating acne, with the right choice for each patient depending on the severity of their breakouts, their skin type, medical history and age. Options include prescription topical and oral medications.

Our cosmetic dermatology practice, Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology Spa also provides an Anti-Acne Facial with or without a peel, which deeply cleanses, exfoliates, extracts material from follicles, and uses acupressure to unclog pores.

For acne scars, patients can choose from laser skin resurfacing, intense pulsed light (IPL), microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and more. Dermal fillers can also be used to address depressions caused by prior breakouts.
