Rhinoplasty

Nose Job for Bryn Mawr, Newtown Square, Philadelphia, and the Main Line

Patients seeking a rhinoplasty in the Bryn Mawr, Newtown Square, and Philadelphia area tend to do so for one or both of two reasons:

  • They want to change the size or shape of their nose for aesthetic purposes
  • They want to improve their nose’s functionality for easier breathing

A rhinoplasty, often referred to as a nose job, may impact any of the nose’s main components, including the bone of the upper structure, cartilage of the lower portion, and skin. But what is rhinoplasty? This surgery can alter a nose’s projection, width, and angle, as well as how far the tip of the nose extends down toward the mouth or points upward and outward. A patient may choose rhinoplasty to correct an obvious asymmetry, change the overall size of the nose to bring it more in proportion with the rest of the face, repair damage due to an injury or previous surgery, fill in a depressed area on the bridge, reduce wide nostrils, or fix a deviated septum. Dr. Laura Gowen will tailor the plan for your rhinoplasty to your aesthetic desires and functional needs.

What Does Rhinoplasty Involve?

There are two main types of rhinoplasty procedures: closed or open.

A closed rhinoplasty means that the surgery is performed via incisions made inside the nostrils, where they can’t be seen. An open rhinoplasty involves making an external incision on the columella, the thin piece of skin that separates your nostrils, and raising the skin to allow access to the cartilaginous and bony structures underneath.

Each rhinoplasty is incredibly unique, but before and after pictures of other patients can give you a rough idea of what your specific procedure could do for you.

Rhinoplasties are most commonly performed under general anesthesia. Common requests and nose job techniques in the Philadelphia area include but are not limited to dorsal hump reduction, narrowing the nasal width, altering the nasal tip, and correcting a septal deviation. Patients requiring reconstruction after trauma or multiple previous nasal surgeries may require cartilage grafts from other areas of the body.

After surgery, most patients can expect a splint that will stay in place for about a week. Bruising and swelling are common, and the worst of it will resolve in about two weeks. However, a very small amount of swelling can last several months to a year.

Options Beyond a Rhinoplasty for Bryn Mawr, Newtown Square, and Philadelphia

The nose is such a prominent feature, many patients will find that even a small change to it can drastically alter their appearance. Some may want a nose job and nothing more, while others may want to refresh and rejuvenate their entire face.

The forehead can be tightened and smoothed out with a brow lift, and a blepharoplasty can focus on creating eyelids that help convey a more youthful expression.

Sagging on the lower half of the face can be remedied with a facelift.

Ear Surgery is also available to bring those features more into proportion with the rest of the face, increasing or decreasing prominence as desired to match a nose newly shaped by rhinoplasty.
