What Is BOTOX® for Migraines?

BOTOX® is a product that contains botulinum toxin as its main ingredient. This botulinum toxin is purified, and only small doses of it are injected during a session.

When used for softening facial wrinkles—which is what the injectable is best known for—it works by relaxing specific facial muscles to prevent dynamic lines from forming on the surface as certain facial expressions are made. The active ingredient prevents nerve signals from reaching the muscles, so they are unable to trigger contractions.

BOTOX® for migraines works in a similar way, but by blocking the nerve signals that cause pain instead of contractions. Although the Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology Spa injectors do not offer migraine treatments, but are happy to explain the neuromodulator’s many uses in order to highlight its safety and range of applications. Contact us for BOTOX® cost details and more information on treatments beyond BOTOX® injections for migraines.

BOTOX® for Migraines: Which Types of Headaches Does BOTOX® Work Best On?

BOTOX® for migraines has received FDA-approval as a treatment for adults aged 18 and older who experience chronic migraines, which means they happen 15 days or more every month. The treatment works better for those who have very frequent migraines. BOTOX® for migraines typically won’t be approved for those who have headaches less than 15 days every month.

What Is the Procedure for BOTOX® for Migraines?

BOTOX® for migraines is usually administered with a very small needle in the shallow muscles below the skin in different key areas of the head and neck. In most cases, BOTOX® for migraines causes minimal discomfort. It may cause mild, short-term side effects such as drooping eyelids, muscle stiffness spasms or weakness at the BOTOX® injection sites, and neck pain. These should resolve on their own.

Patients will usually need to have BOTOX® for migraines injections every 12 weeks in order to maintain the benefit of the treatment.

Beyond BOTOX® for Migraines: What Are Some Other Types of BOTOX® Treatments?

There are a variety of medical and cosmetic treatments available that are applied to different areas in addition to BOTOX® treatments for migraines. Some examples include under eyes BOTOX®  for wrinkles and muscle bulges below the eyes, BOTOX® for forehead wrinkles, BOTOX® for frown lines and crow’s feet, and other BOTOX® face treatments, like a BOTOX® brow lift to provide a subtle lift to the eyebrows and brighten the eyes, jawline/masseter BOTOX® to minimize bulky muscles on the lower face and provide a slimmer jawline area, or BOTOX® for marionette lines to improve specific wrinkles by lifting the corners of the mouth. All of these options are available from our injectors.

Some patients are also interested in BOTOX® for TMJ, which relaxes the jaw area and improves symptoms associated with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. Like the migraine option, this treatment exists, but is not available at Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology Spa.

Dermal fillers temporarily add volume to reduce wrinkles or enhance the definition of facial contours. Unlike fillers and botulinum toxin injectables, laser skin resurfacing improves other skin conditions and the general quality of the skin, targeting imperfections such as uneven skin texture and tone, spots, or sun damage in addition to softening wrinkles and scars.
